A pap smear testing will help determine the presence of harmful viruses such as vulvar vestibulitis or plantar wart. Papanicolaou smears are started at the age of 18 years old or sooner, if a woman is sexually active. Women who have been diagnosed negative (with no abnormalities revealed) three times in a row and those who are not sexually active may take the smear less frequently.
