Inconclusive Pap

An inconclusive pap won't show if HPV or cervical dysplasia is present. Women an undeterminable cytology by traditional methods will generally be requested to repeat the test within a 4-6 month period to monitor abnormality, cervical inspection (colposcopy & biopsy) of suspicious areas, and testing for HPV. Newer methods such as Thin Prep and Hybrid Capture give higher confidence to abnormal results. An inconclusive pap won't show if HPV or cervical dysplasia is present.

Inconclusive Pap

  -

HPV, Cervical Dysplasia

An undetermined cytology means the specimen was difficult to differentiate. The quality gathering and preserving the specimen, or the presence unrecognizable or borderline cellular changes too difficult to classify affect the result. Also, slight irregularities associated with minor cervical infections, menopausal fluctuations, douching, or other irritations can cause some confusion. An inconclusive pap won't show if HPV or cervical dysplasia is present.
