Ascus Pap Smear
An ASCUS Pap smear result may be followed by a colposcopy for cervical cancer evaluation.
Women afflicted with this grade of abnormality are at considerable risk for producing a high-grade cervical cancer indicator lesion (about 1 in 10), which requires some form of additional follow-up. Risk assessment and repeat tests are generally performed before subjecting women to invasive surgical procedures.

This acronym is short for squamous cells of undetermined significance; used to classify the least level of abnormality. Subjectivity influences readings for this grade of abnormality, thus, some pathologists may translate this normal.
