Bleeding after pap smear is not uncommon, however, unusual heavy bleeding following a Pap smear can be indicative of vaginosis or friable cervix. Papanicolaou testing is essential for all sexually active women and those older eighteen. It should be done annually since cervical cancer may not be predicted and no test can give a 100% guarantee the absence of abnormal cells in the body. Bleeding after pap smear is not uncommon, however, unusual heavy bleeding following a Pap smear can be indicative of vaginosis or friable cervix.

Generally, the procedure of taking a sample of the tissue from the cervix to be examined under a microscope is not painful. Some women report unpleasant feelings during the procedure, yet pain should never occur.
