Pap smears that show evidence of HPV will often be followed with a colposcopy for prevention of cervical cancer. A positive result can mean there is an inflammation caused by infection, early signs of cancer called dysplasia, more serious signs of cancer called "carcinoma in situ", or more advanced cancer. This test has helped drastically lower the number of women who die of cervical cancer. Early detection is important. This is a test performed on your cervix to find signs of cancer. Your doctor will take a sample of cells from your cervix with a cotton swab. This sample is then sent to a lab to be checked for abnormalities. Cells go through a change before they become cancerous. Pap smears that show evidence of HPV will often be followed with a colposcopy for prevention of cervical cancer.
