Atypical Pap Smears
With atypical pap smears, human papilloma virus is usually the cause and a leep procedure is recommended.
Cells may look abnormal if a woman used vaginal items 24-48 before having Papanicolaou test. Douching and inadequate time for the test (close to menses) may also influence the cells. Usually, a repeat test is performed to determine if the cells are truly abnormal or the results appeared false positive.
