An ASCUS pap smear may require a colposcopy to check for cervical cancer. It is not unusual for cases like this to be read as normal by a different doctor. For this reason, risky surgery should be avoided until a more definitive diagnosis can be obtained with either a repeat exam or a biopsy. Defined as atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance, this term refers to the least abnormal grade. Many pathologists will grade these as normal while others will grade them as abnormal. A Digene Hybrid Capture Test is particularly helpful in this situation. An ASCUS pap smear may require a colposcopy to check for cervical cancer.
